Christmas Journal / December Daily Flip Through - Week 1 | Travelers Notebook

Hi Everyone!

I have a flip through for you today of the first week in my Christmas journal. I don't know what to call it really. It is my December Daily because I am doing it everyday in December but I also did it for a week before December too. It is basically the place I am recording all of our festivities!

I hope you enjoy having a look into my journal!

Reminiscing in my Fauxdori

Since I got this new Fauxdori (from Lyra & Co) for Christmas, all I've wanted to do is use it to journal in! It is the perfect 'winter' themed fauxdori, without being too classically wintery. Before this I was using my Christmas one, so it's nice to change things up a bit!

I decided to again, use things from my December Stationery Brimbles Box to decorate my journaling pages. I was breaking the ice in this insert, which I always find the most difficult. So I chose to print off some snowy photos from a few years ago and journal about them.  Instead of journaling about the current day, or something that went on recently, I find this the easiest way to start in a new insert. I'm not 100% sure why, but I do it a lot when I get in a rut.
I think my thought process is, if I want to journal then I should take advantage of that motivation, and journal about something from ages ago, because it's better than journaling about nothing!

The snowflake bookmark was in my December Brimbles Box, and it goes with this fauxdori absolutely perfectly! The tassel looks so pretty popping out the top.

I decided to kinda of 'Smash Book' some of the little bits of packaging from the box. Like the blue tissue paper I used to split the pages up (though for some reason this made it harder to journal on, my Coleto pens just did not like the tissue paper haha). I also kept the little penguin sticker (in the top left corner), because it was too cute not to.

I used the Silver Snowflake washi from the Brimble Box, along with some silver glitter tape from Paperchase, and I also cut some of the Ellie Beth Designs UK snowflake stickers in half & stuck half at the top of the page. I went through the stickers from my Brimbles Box and picked out some of the glitter trees and penguins to add to the page.

I added two dates at the top of the page, one was the date I did this journaling, the second was the date the photos were taken, and the day I was journaling about. I'm glad I did this, because when I'm looking back through my journals, the date is the first thing I look for on a page.

I used one of the Winter Journaling Cards from the set I received in my Brimbles Box, and made it into a little flap. I did this because I had three photos I wanted to add to the pages, but I didn't want to have to cut down on any journaling or decorating. Plus having little hidden bits in a journaling spread is always fun to look back on!

I used the other half of the Ellie Beth Designs UK snowflake sticker at the bottom of this page.
I added some red and white paper tape from Paperchase to break up the straight edges of the photos, and I also cut some corners out of a journaling card, so I could add them to the photos to make them look like photo corners.

I wanted to add one of the absolutely adorable die cuts that Anna has designed to the pages somewhere, and I couldn't quite work out where to put it. I eventually decided it would fit really nicely at the top of the journaling card flap. It fit really well with the trees and didn't cover up too many things on the page. I chose to staple this on, just to make it a bit different.
There was a little bit of blank space I thought needed to be filled too so I added some B&W heart washi tape from Cloudy Cow poking out from underneath. I didn't want anything too eye catching, I just needed something to break up that area a little.

On the opposite page is where I left a bigger space to do most of my journaling. I added the biggest photo I had of our house in the snow at the bottom of the page, and I used the little snowman stamp just above it, which I thought would look really cute. (I did realise that his eyes wouldn't stamp properly, so I had to draw those in afterwards!!)

I added some more little corners to the photo and some more of the red and white striped tape.
I used some alphabet stickers I got from Hobbycraft, to add the word 'REMINISCE' at the bottom.
(can you tell I ran out of N's?! So I had to change an 'M' into one!!).

The little 'Awesome' die cut was from a die cut set by Carpe Diem (Also available on Anna's shop here). Then the cup, snowflake, and penguin stickers were all from my December Brimbles Box!

At the moment I'm really in a journaling faze, specifically in my fauxdori (can you blame me... This fauxdori is beautiful!). I've loved using things from my Brimbles Boxes to decorate my pages, and I can't wait to start filling up this insert even more. Now I've broken the ice there'll be no stopping me!
I feel like I can use so many different supplies in here, and it never looks 'messy', I've got stamps, stickers, washi tape, alphabets, photos, die cuts, tissue paper, and journaling cards! All in the space of two pages.
Journaling gives you the freedom to use and do whatever the heck you want, and I think that's what I love about it!

Happy Mail Box, Christmas Journaling!

So in November I received the Happy Mail Brimbles Box, inside was lots of Christmassy goodies which were of course intended to be used to create Happy Mail! But between then and now, things have been so busy, I just have not had the time to write any letters to my penpals. I thought I was moving, then it was postponed. I went up north for a few weeks, and left my camera at home 300 miles away. Everything was all last minute and completely all over the place.
BUT over the past week I've finally managed to catch up with myself a little bit! I decided to go through my November Happy Mail box and use some of the things in there to decorate my journal pages.

Just before Christmas I bought myself the Canon Selphy printer, so I'm now able to incorporate photos into my journaling! In my Christmas planning insert I left some space to add some journaling, so that's what I am showing you today.
I thought it'd be nice to have the planning, the progress and some journaling from Christmas 2015, all in one place. I might also keep this insert to use again next year as there's still plenty of space left in it even after I added a few pages of journaling!

One of the things I wanted to use were the adorable Christmas Gift Tags, I think they work perfectly to fill in some blank space and decorate the page. I layered it up with one of the Santa Sticky Notes, I feel like these have a massive variety of uses instead of just being used to jot notes down on.
I chose to round the corners of most of my photos, but for the one of my dog I wanted to add some little kraft paper corners to it, just to mix things up. I did this by simply cutting the four corners off of a kraft paper sticky note from Tiger, and then gluing them over the corners of the photo. I used my nail to dent them down so the edge of the photo's showed through, and gave a little bit of a '3D' effect.
The Owl sticker is from a 2014 Paperchase set, so I'm not sure you can find this in stores anymore.

At the bottom of the page I used the Christmas Ribbon & the Fair Isle Christmas Washi Tape from my Happy Mail Brimbles Box! I also used some other washi tape I had and the Gold Glitter Tape from Cloudy Cow. The layering I created at the bottom with these tapes and ribbon, is one of the thing I enjoy the most when it comes to decorating my journal pages.
Again the Christmas Pudding sticker is from the same Paperchase pack from 2014.

Over on this page I had some spare snowflake cellophane I picked up from Wilkos, and attached it over the top of the photo. Because the photo had a lot of black on it, adding the snowflakes helped to break that up, and they also show up really well on the black background. I attached it with staples as glue would have shown through. I then stuck a little collage of stickers and washi tape on top of it.

Last of all I added this photo of my and my boyfriend on Christmas Day both wearing the same Christmas jumper (just in different colours). We did this without knowing, we are currently going long distance so it was a nice little connection we had that made us feel a little closer (Ps. 'Scuse the cruddy lighting he took the photo in, which makes him look like a tomato).
I layered this photo on top of the left over kraft sticky note I had from cutting the corners off for the photo on the opposite page. Then I used my Typewriter Alphabet Stickers from Hobbycraft to add the word 'Matching' below the photo.
I drew some little stars around the photo and added another little collage of stickers at the bottom of the page in the blank space, and that was it!

Even though the Brimbles Boxes have specific themes and uses, they really can be used for whatever you want. Cards, and writing paper can be used as backgrounds or to add a section of journaling to a page, tags and stickers can be used for decoration. You just have to think outside the box and see what you can come up with!

I hope you enjoyed seeing how I used my Happy Mail box for journaling!
Happy New Year!

Fauxbonichi Flip Through - March, April & May 2015

It's been a while but I am back with a flip through of my fauxbonichi! Here is a look at my pages from March, April and May of 2015. I don't know if the Fauxbonichi / Hobonichi has gone out of fashion at all but I don't see anywhere near as many flip throughs as I used to. I still love mine, just that life sometimes gets in my way and I have lots of other interests that I like to do too so it is a case of juggling them because I can't do everything in the evening!

Hope you enjoy my flip...

February Fauxbonichi Flip - "It's Lacking and that's OK!"

It is that time of month again where I share my Fauxbonichi with you and what I have been journalling about and how over the month. Well as you know this month has been quite disasterous for me in many ways but noteably my boiler and my Splodgey bear. Around the 12th of the month I just gave up journalling all together for emotional reasons and also for energy and enthusiasm reasons. For me that's OK though and I am not going to apologise for not having so much to show you because ultimately it is my journal as your journal is yours. Your journal should be your sanctuary and something that you enjoy and want to do and not something that is a chore or that you need to do in order to share a video on it. I just wanted to say to you that it is OK if you don't feel like journalling and it is OK to miss days. Just have fun with it and journal when you want to.

So off my soap box now and here is my flip...

January Fauxbonichi Flip Through

It is time again to share with you my journal pages from the last month in my Fauxbonichi. I have been blown away by the amount of people who asked if I will share again this month. I am incredibly flattered that so many of you would like to see my pages so of course, here is my flip through. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoy creating my pages and then revisiting them again.

I also like to pick out a few of my favourite pages to share in photograph form here on the blog. I think Tigger has to be my top fav though!!

Keeping a daily journal / My life isn't interesting enough!

I often get comments from you lovely folk that you would like to start journalling but just don't think that your life is interesting enough for daily journalling. I just wanted to go over that and share my two pennies worth! Who said that journalling had to be daily anyway? Just have fun with it is what I say and just journal when you feel like you want to. No pressure OK!

December Fauxbonichi Flip Through

Wowza! Where did December go? I don't know about you but for me December went by in such a blurr. I had a blast but it was also very busy and towards the end I was so grateful for the Christmas break and vegging out.

So here I am with my monthly flip through of my Fauxbonichi journal. As you can see the busier I got the more tired I became in the evenings which led me to less art and more sticking things in which is fine because I really enjoyed doing that and my journal is supposed to be a place where I can have fun and enjoy myself.

Here are some of my favourite pages from the month...

As I said I just love sticking things down and I really enjoyed just randomly sticking down stickers without a care in the World!

I also used more washi tape and other embellishments like this Father Christmas die cut.

I love to draw Paddington, he is just so easy to draw and lots of fun too. He pops up at least once in one of my journals!

I also experimented with printing out a photo to add to my page.

And then towards the end of the month back to doodles the same way as I started.

My Fauxdori Set Up

A few of you have been asking to see more of my Fauxdori and how I have set it up. It is not that I didn't want to show you or share it with you it is just that there is nothing that spectacular about it. The cover is beautiful and well made but I don't do anything different with mine or out of the ordinary that you haven't already seen from other peoples. Still I love to look at other people's set ups so it is only fair that I share mine now isn't it!

A lot of you were worried when I put my fauxdori up for sale on instagram thinking that I had abandoned it. I can assure you that is not the case. I sold my first fauxdori because I saw one that had come up for sale that I really really wanted and to make room for it and to raise the funds to buy it, I sold mine original one. I was sad to see it go as we had become good friends but I wanted this one for a couple of reasons. Firstly it was wider so I wouldn't have so much over hang with the notebooks, the leather was sturdier, it was chunkier to hold more and lastly I knew it would be really well made. And it is. This was a fantastic buy and I really do love it!

On the outside I have a charm that I purchased from Etsy. It wasn't very expensive at all but I love it. It has a cute Bambi and thumper along with the skunk that I can never remember the name of. It doesn't sit quite right due to the way the loop is but I don't really care, I like the way it looks on there anyway!

Then inside I have a folder which houses little pieces of ephemera to use in my journal and a couple of notebooks.

It is quite hard to do a set up post just in photos especially as I don't really have that much inside my faauxdori but I really hope you have enjoyed a little peek and some more upclose shots! It is much easier to see the full workings and the insides in my video...

Coping with this crazy life - Journal your socks off!

All in all I have a fantastic life if I do say so myself but I suffer like most from this condition of being human. I bet dear reader you have this too from time to time sometimes, no doubt, for what seems like longer than most. It is a subject that many people talk about even scientists, it is the one thing that unites us all as human beings, we are just that, human. Good stuff happens, bad stuff happens and in my personal opinion it is how we deal with those situations that ultimately reflects how happy we are in general.

I am not coming at you all 'chirpy chirpy isn't life wonderful' in an annoying way, goodness gracious I have seen one heck of a lot of rubbish in my life, some of which I have gone over before in videos and blog posts, but I have gotten through it, I am still here to tell those tales. It is one of the reasons why I journal, to get me through the rubbish, to cope and process what is going on around me so that I can learn from it, develop, grow as a person and move forward with my life. Everything we go through makes us who we are and from time to time we need to develop a way in which to cope with those situations. Journalling is my method of coping.

Please do watch the video as I can express it so much better verbally!

So my journal is my coping mechanism and during this traumatic stage in my life I have ditched all my journals and started a new one just for this particular coping strategy.

This journal is a Moleskine sketchbook and I used one pen, the Papermate Flair. All other journals got pushed to the wayside because I wanted a journal just to deal with this situation and only this situation, it is just what I wanted to do and how I was going to cope and it has helped.

In this journal I wrote reams and reams, just writing about how I was feeling. I poured my heart out and I shed some tears but it was all for the purpose of healing and gaining some perspective. There are people dealing with much bigger problems than I am and this is just a small part of my life, I need to remember that so I can heal and move forward and get my life back.

It is not my best work artistically but it has meaning to me. The little sketches and the little affirmations and words of encouragement I gave myself are what gave me the push that I needed. Sometimes I just wrote to say that I was sad. Sometimes I wrote long stretches of writing, other times it was really short. It all helped get me through.

I also documented my journey through my appointments at the doctors and physio; when I went, the advice given, all of that helped me to see how I was improving and how far I have come because I have come a long way. I even took photos as my hand looked bad and I thought it was never going to get better, even one week after that photo I can visually see the progress. I all helped me cope, get through and continue to climb upwards.

It is going to be a long journey and no one said it would be easy. I see the physio again in three weeks time, the consultant in four weeks but at the time of injury they told me I was looking at a 12 week (at least)recovery period. I need to stay positive so I can get to that point. I have come this far, why give up now?

Hopefully you can see now why I journal and what a difference it makes. I didn't write this post or record the video for sympathy, I just wanted to share another reason why I journal and how it is a good coping mechanism.

I hope dear friends that this has been useful to you in some way and I hope that if you are struggling with a situation at the moment that you can find a way to cope as I have done for me. Much love to you x

Art journal flip through

I am half way through my current art journal and I have been sharing snippets on instagram and on the Journal Gypsies blog and some of you have asked to see more. Of course I am always happy to share my art journal (or the non private parts of it of course!) but it would be a while before it was completely finished so I thought I would do a half journal flip for you so you can see how this is coming along. I will do a full journal flip so you can see what it is like when it is fully completed.

Hope you enjoy...

My thoughts on Midori Travellers Notebook.

I have for some time, had a curiosity over a Midori Travellers Notebook. I have watched videos on YouTube from Poketfullofvintage, Rhomany's Realm, MissVickyBee and Raven Ink and have enjoyed looking at their set ups but always thought that I didn't need one in my life. I know a lot of people love them but here are my reasons for not getting one myself:

  1. The size. From looking at other peoples to me they just looked too narrow. I am so used to an A5 size or larger. I knew that I could make a larger fauxdori if I bought the materials and followed a tutorial but I don't feel that I am ready for that yet.
  2.  I don't feel like I need a journal to be transportable. I don't take my journal out of the house, if I do it is on holiday and a larger journal is fine to take with me. That being said I don't journal that much on holidays as I find that I am too busy doing holiday type things!
  3. What do you do with the notebooks when you have finished with them, they look really small, do you bind them together at the end? I just feel that the journals inside are so small and not very substantial, call me silly but I feel like I would want something 'more'.
  4. I like changing covers and journals, I find this motivates me. I don't know why but it does, I love the feeling of starting a new journal.
  5. Price! I just can't justify the price of it at the moment.
  6. Everybody already has one. I don't like following the herd especially when I am this late to the party, I don't want to 'copy'.
I explain all of things in my video this week:

OK so at the very start of this post I mentioned that I have always had a curiosity for them. So after a lot of thinking and researchI now have one. I have been thinking about getting one for a while, I love to journal, I love journals, I like trying new things but all of my reasons above kept on coming to me. Do I want one, do I? I ummmed and ahhhhed for a while. Something kept on pulling me towards them, maybe it is all those people on YouTube selling it to me, I don't know. So anyway I decided to feed my curiosity and take the plunge just to see for myself what it is all about and put my mind at rest. So introducing you to my new Fauxdori...

I bought a Fauxdori from Ebay and I have to say the photos of the item that the seller put up do not do it justice (if you are interersted in purchasing one yourself, she has lots not just this one so go to their ebay here). I decided on a Fauxdori as I just couldn't justify the spend on something I wasn't sure as to whether I was going to like it or not so I thought a Fauxdori would suit me just fine. Who knows, maybe if I love it I will treat myself further down the line. I had also thought about making one myself but when I looked into the cost of the materials it came to about the same as just buying one so I thought I would let someone else make it for me!

I am still having a play with it and getting used to how it works and everything. I currently have two concerns that I want to iron out. Firstly the elastics seem very strong or tight and have cut into my notebook a little bit. I don't know if I have too much in there or not. I currently have three in there. I see so many people have really stuffed ones and I am not sure if mine will be able to take it or if I am just being silly. I don't know if the elastic will continue to cut into the paper and also the leather is also alot smaller so you can see the edges of the notebooks peeking through Is that how it is supposed to be? I am not sure if I am just being fussy or not! Anyway as I said it is all things that I need to play and work with and sort out. Any tips and advice would be gratefully received!

So I went with the travellers notebook size and I have been journalling in there already. So far the size hasn't been an issue for me and it is actually a lot wider than how it appeared in other peoples photos. It is not the A5 size that I know and love but I do like it. A few more days and I will probably be well and truly there. I have journalled, stuck snaps in, doodled and it is working OK so far!

I haven't put my elastic on properly that holds the books round the middle as I want to find a nice charm to go on there. I have seen other people put charms on theirs and so now I want one!

I decided to make myself a folder. I remember seeing other people on YouTube show theirs and after a day or two I realised that this is something that I would really like to do too. I didn't actually watch any tutorials I just sat at my desk looking at my fauxdori and scrapbook paper and the idea came to me. It was really quick and easy to make and it just has a little tuck where I am storing cards with washi tape and some instagram snaps ready for adding to my journal. I even punched a teddy bear in it which I think looks really cute as you can see the paper design underneath, I love it!

So there we are folks, there is an introduction to my new fauxdori and why until now I haven't bought one. I am not sure if I love it yet but I do like it. I am going to continue to use it and see how I go. I am sure I spotted Mr B covetting it himself and I am thinking of buying him one for Christmas, he too is a journaller and I am sure he would like one. If you missed his video on what he journals about you can catch it here.

Do you have a Midori? Let me know what you think about it and if you have any blog posts or videos on it I would love to see as I am soaking up anything midori at the moment! Until next time, happy journalling!

My Current Journal Collection {Part Two}

Following on from last week I wanted to share with you the remainder of my current journals. If you missed last week you can see it on this blog post.

So let's get straight into it, here are the rest of the journals that I keep...

Anniversary Journal

When we got married I had a picture of us printed onto a notebook from Photobox and I only ever write in this journal once a year on or around our wedding anniversary. Mr B and I went to school together and we have known each other since we were 11, only getting together as a couple age 16 when we left school and realised that we missed seeing each other everyday. We then married in 2007 and this journal was started on our one year anniversary.

In this journal I record how we celebrated our actually anniversary and I also record things like where we are at in our life, what we have done or accomplished that year and our goals and aspirations for the coming year. I also like to record some factual data as follows:

  • Who was no 1 in the music charts
  • The price of a pint of milk
  • The price of a load of bread
  • The price of a litre of fuel
  • Who is Prime Minister
  • Our place of employment, job title and salary
  • Our address

I think these things would be really interesting to look at in years to come because it is those simple every day things that we take for granted when we are currently living them that would be fascinating in 50 years time!

Ideas Journal
I have an ideas journal for jotting down and recording all of those little things that one day I may want to refer to.

Home decor ideas
I have a journal dedicated to the house with ideas and inspiration for possible decoration. Whenever I see something in a magazine I clip it out and stick it in. I didn't want to make any rash decisions when it came to decorating the house as this is a long term project so we want to make sure we get it right and take time to formulate our ideas!

Character journal
My character journal is a journal written by my alter ego 'Elana'. It is kind of a work of fiction but also an outlet when I was going through a very rough time in my life. I could write as this person and have fun in a mystical world. To be perfectly honest I haven't written in this for way over a year, which is great in a lot of ways but also I feel it is a shame as I liked her and the story. Maybe I could pick it up again now I am in a better, brighter place?

Meditation / Dream Journal
I like to meditate frequently so I have a journal beside me so that I can jot down anything that comes to me afterwards. I also have some funky dreams sometimes so I like to record those in their too.

Faces Sketchbook
Last but not least I have a sketchbook dedicated to my drawing study of faces. I was always told off at college for drawing what was in my head rather than what I saw so every now and then I like to have a practise and as I very often like to draw / paint faces in my art journal then this is great practise for me. Again I haven't used this one in a while but it it there if I want to. This is a sketch from about a year and a half ago...

And that folks sums up my current journal collection. For now. It will change, I know it will, the reason I know it will as I have something on order currently so that will add to my collection in a matter of weeks. And then of course I will finish my art journal so it will be on to a new one. So it kind of changes in as much as the book itself will change but the format may not. Who knows, lets just wait and see!

I would love to see your journals if you would like to share them with me :D

My current journal collection {part one}

This week I thought I would share with you my current journal collection as it has been a while since I did that. I last shared them with you in May last year and I like to take stock every now and then and look at the journals that I am using. I do this because I like to take time to think about whether they still serve a purpose for me and whether I still want to use them. I hope you also find this interesting and that it might inspire you to journal in some way, whatever way that would be for you.

So here are my journals:

Art Journal
I call my art journal such because it is the term that most people will understand or recognise, however I prefer to call it just my journal, my visual journal or indeed an artiststs journal. In that journal I like to create art as well as incorporate collage and writing.

Sometimes I paint for paints sake just because I have a desire to be creative, sometimes I use it for concept art to develop something else or to learn new techniques. I also like to part scrapbook by using photos and smashbook by adding receipts and flyers from places we have been.

Whatever it is, it is my journal and it is the documentation of my life, my place to process feelings and emotions and a place to be happy or spend time with myself.

No pressure journal
I won't go into this too much as I wrote a whole blog post dedicated to this last week

Written journal
I like to keep a written journal solely for, you guessed it, writing! I like to write reams and reams when the mood takes me and at the moment I am using my A5 Finsbury Filofax for that. I love the feel and quality of the leather and I also like the flexibility of the rings for changing things about. In that journal is my life documented in writing and everything that goes with that good and bad!

My Filofax
I am using my daily Filofax to complement my written journal. In the back of the Filofax  I have blank paper (lined) in case the urge to write hits me when I don't have my journal with me. I just write in her and then add it into my journal later on.

Sea Journal
This was a book that I picked up from a charity stand for 50p. Whilst I started this and intended it to be an altereed book all related to the sea and mermaids, I literally did two pages in it and then run out of motivation for it. I still keep it in my collection of current journals because I really like the book itself. One day I may go back to this but I am not sure but don't want to part with the gorgeousness of it just yet!

BOS
My BOS is my book of shadows

Sketchbook

A whole lot more information on these journals as well as glimpses into them can be found in the video:

I hope you have enjoyed a little look into some of my journals. There are many more to come and I will share these with you next week!
